How do I see where a value in my results came from?

Prev Next

When a number in your results looks wrong, the first question is where it came from. LumiCode's lineage shows exactly how a result was arrived at: the tables, joins and filters behind it, and what each calculated column is worked out from, through views and even other providers. Candela can then explain it in plain words.

Prerequisites

  • LumiCode installed and signed in. See How do I install LumiCode?

  • Lineage turned on, which it is by default. If /set shows lineage off, run /set lineage on and run the query again.

Note

Lineage isn't available for queries run together as a multi-query.

Methods

Method 1: See how the whole result was arrived at

Type /lineage and press Enter. LumiCode draws the query as a tree of tables, joins and filters, read from the top down. To include the full filter expressions, type /lineage all.

Method 2: Explain one column

A marker on a column heading means LumiCode can explain that column:

  • ƒ: calculated

  • Σ: aggregated

  • ∂: derived

To explain one, type /lineage <column>, for example /lineage MarketValue. LumiCode shows what the column is calculated from.

You can also do this while browsing the results:

  1. Type /rows and press Enter.

  2. Press c to open the column picker.

  3. Move to the column and press x. To see the whole query instead, press t.

Method 3: Ask Candela to explain it

Type /lineage ai for the whole query, or /lineage <column> ai for one column. Candela writes an explanation in plain words into the transcript.

From a lineage screen in /rows, press a to do the same.

Candela availability

Candela is currently available to some customers only. If it isn't available in your domain, LumiCode tells you, and Methods 1 and 2 still work.
