# What is a transaction portfolio?

A *transaction portfolio* enables you to build holdings (positions) in a set of instruments. [See how to create a transaction portfolio](/v1/docs/how-do-i-create-a-transaction-portfolio).

Once created, you can load economic activity into a transaction portfolio by:

- [Directly setting or adjusting holdings](/v1/docs/how-do-i-manually-adjust-or-set-holdings).
- [Upserting transactions](/v1/docs/how-do-i-create-or-update-a-transaction) with a transaction type such as Buy or Sell.
- [Subscribing to corporate actions](/v1/docs/corporate-actions) such as dividends or stock splits.

In some circumstances, LUSID may generate transactions for you, for example bond coupon transactions if you have [automatic instrument lifecycle events](/v1/docs/understanding-instrument-lifecycle-events-emitted-by-lusid) turned on in your domain.

Note the following:

- LUSID does not store [instruments](/v1/docs/instruments) themselves in a transaction portfolio, but rather resolves transactions and other economic activity *to* instruments stored in the LUSID Security Master.
- LUSID does not maintain a static record of your [holdings](/v1/docs/holdings) in a transaction portfolio, but rather replays the history of economic activity on demand to calculate your live positions in affected instruments. This real-time holdings report is the primary input into [portfolio valuations](/v1/docs/valuations) and profit and loss reporting in LUSID.
