# How do I roll or unwind a futures contract?

You can manage your upcoming futures contract expirations using the Rebalance dashboard. LUSID generates the suggested orders for you to:

- Unwind a futures contract, that is, sell out of the position
- Roll a futures contract, that is, replace the futures contract with an equivalent futures contract with a later maturity date

To do so:

1. Sign in to the [LUSID web app](https://www.lusid.com/app) with suitable credentials.
2. Navigate to **Portfolio Management > Rebalance** via the top left menu.
3. Choose your Rebalance dashboard configuration [as usual](/v1/docs/configuring-rebalancing-use-cases-in-the-rebalance-dashboard).
4. Select one or more `Future` holdings that you wish to roll or unwind. Note you can select all rows in the Rebalance grid to manage all of your `Future` holdings at once. ![](https://cdn.document360.io/d575ad81-c0ed-4980-bbd1-d59ac5c3de82/Images/Documentation/image(639).png)
5. Select the **Options** icon > **Unwind / Roll**. ![](https://cdn.document360.io/d575ad81-c0ed-4980-bbd1-d59ac5c3de82/Images/Documentation/image(635).png)
6. Select **Unwind** or **Roll** from the **Unwind / Roll** dropdown. ![](https://cdn.document360.io/d575ad81-c0ed-4980-bbd1-d59ac5c3de82/Images/Documentation/image(636).png)
7. If you select:
  - **Unwind:** LUSID suggests an order to sell out of the position. If you wish to proceed with the order, click **Create**. ![](https://cdn.document360.io/d575ad81-c0ed-4980-bbd1-d59ac5c3de82/Images/Documentation/image(637).png)
  - **Roll:** LUSID suggests orders to:

You can make any adjustments to the new `Future` order [as usual](/v1/docs/how-do-i-create-an-order), then select **Create**. ![](https://cdn.document360.io/d575ad81-c0ed-4980-bbd1-d59ac5c3de82/Images/Documentation/image(638).png)
    - Sell out of the current position
    - Prompt you to select an extended `Future` to buy at the current market price

Once you click **Create**, LUSID [creates](/v1/docs/understanding-how-lusids-order-management-system-works) and [blocks](/v1/docs/what-is-order-blocking-in-lusid) orders for each instrument to be traded. You can use the Order Blotter to manage and monitor your orders and executions as usual. [Read more.](/v1/docs/how-do-i-block-orders)
